Wholesale Italian produce for London kitchens

For London kitchens cooking Italian, Ortaggi runs a specialist strand of its family-run New Covent Garden round: Mediterranean produce hand-picked at the market, with the Italian pantry behind it, delivered before service.

An Italian range, chosen with the cuisine in mind

We supply the fresh, chilled and pantry lines a London Italian kitchen truly runs on: Mediterranean fruit and veg, Italian and speciality cheeses, and the oils, tinned tomatoes and pasta behind them, all on one van and one invoice. Ortaggi is a family-run wholesaler, trading from New Covent Garden Market since 2007.

Giuseppe Santamaria, our co-founder and Purchasing Director, walks the market with Franco through the night, choosing the fresh lines by hand. The chef-owned trattorias, tasting-menu kitchens and Italian bistros we supply stay with us because the produce is right and the people buying it understand what "right" means on an Italian menu.

Whether you run a neighbourhood trattoria, a fine-dining Italian room or a deli-and-coffee kitchen, you order from one place, and it arrives before service across central and inner London and the wider Greater London area.

Burrata, heritage tomatoes and the lines a dish is built round

Where a menu is written round a few ingredients, those ingredients carry the dish. The burrata, ricotta and mozzarella have to arrive in the condition they left the importer, and the heritage tomatoes, figs and artichokes have to be at their best on the day they are served.

So we buy them that way. Giuseppe and Franco choose the heritage tomatoes, figs, artichokes and seasonal citrus on the stands at New Covent Garden from about half past midnight, by eye and in season, and the soft cheeses are packed apart, kept upright and held cold from our arches to your kitchen door.

When a variety a dish depends on is short or not right that night, you will hear it from us before the van is loaded, while there is still time to change the menu.

The Italian range, across the whole kitchen

  • Mediterranean fruit and veg

Heritage tomatoes, aubergines, courgettes and peppers, figs, artichokes, citrus, herbs and salad leaves, hand-picked at the market overnight, so what reaches your bench is what looked best that night.

  • Italian and speciality cheeses

Burrata, buffalo mozzarella, fior di latte, ricotta, mascarpone, Parmigiano-Reggiano, Grana Padano and pecorino, kept chilled without a break from our arches to your kitchen.

  • The Italian pantry

Oils, vinegars, tinned tomatoes, dried pasta, rice, pulses, olives and capers: the dry store an Italian kitchen relies on, on the same delivery as your fresh and chilled lines.

What Italian kitchens get from us

  • Buyers who know the cuisine.

Giuseppe and Franco choose the fresh lines themselves at New Covent Garden Market, and when something remarkable comes through, we will let you know.

  • One supplier for the whole kitchen.

Fresh produce, dairy and chilled, dry provisions and frozen arrive on one van, with one invoice.

  • Ask for anything we do not carry, and we will gladly source it.

Italian supply questions we get asked

For anything else, do call 0333 091 5281.

  1. Do you supply burrata and fresh Italian dairy?

Yes. The Italian cheeses on our list include burrata, ricotta and mascarpone, buffalo mozzarella and fior di latte, and pecorino, Grana Padano and Parmigiano-Reggiano, bought through the importers Giuseppe deals with and delivered chilled alongside your fresh order.
  2. Do you supply Italian restaurants and tasting-menu kitchens in London?

We do. Chef-owned trattorias, Italian bistros and tasting-menu kitchens across London are among the restaurants we supply, and their fresh lines are chosen at New Covent Garden Market by Giuseppe and Franco through the night.
  3. What if a specific Italian line isn't on your list?

Please ask. If a line you need is not on our standard range, we will source it for you, whether from the stands or from an importer.
